We all know how much natural lawn requires maintenance on a day to day basis to ensure it looks great all the time, mowing, watering, fertilising etc and this takes time and money, with synthetic grass maintenance is reduced but with further studies and feedback their is still maintenance required to ensure up keep of your synthetic grass such as; leaf blowing/vacuuming, washing and treating for weeds.

Most suppliers of synthetic grass will promote how it's maintenance is minimal, however a university in the USA has found that the costs and labour associated with maintaining this type of turf requires a numbers of hours and money to ensure top quality results.  An indoor sports field registered it cost them roughly $22,000 a year in maintenance and 280 hours in man power to maintain.

However, waying the dollars and hours up for the synthetic grass on a sports field to a natural grass sports field it is still considerably less, but needs to be consider before making a decision.  When using synthtetic grass for residential and other smaller areas it appears to be more cost effective and less time consuming, however it's not just money that needs to be considered, it the environment we live in.

When installing synthetic grass into parks, sports fields and other large areas that are of high usage on a day to day basis, owners must understand they will require more maintenance regularly that a residential house that doesn't use it so often.  Regular maintenance on sporting fields require monthly vacuuming, weekly leaf blowing to remove debris and to remove any rubbish.  There are services now available to hire someone to maintain your synthetic grass, all this needs to be considered before making your decision.

Other maintenance that needs to be carried out to maintain it's qualities is fabric softner to ensure reduced static cling, sanitization to reduce diseases/infection and washing to keep cooler in summer to reduce heat related effects, all this requires money and time but ensures your synthetic grass remains in top shape and form for day to day use year round.

Overtime weeds will try and overtake your synthetic grass which is natural but this can be treated with using a herbicide.  Owners of synthetic grass also need to be aware of it sometimes having mold and fungi if not it the right temperatures etc therefore causing problems and needs to be treated with a fungicide also on a regular basis.

Ongoing repairs such seams, rubber and grading are all something that may need to be consider after your synthetic grass has been laid.
