Fake Grass, Fake Lawn, Fake Turf - The Science and Installation of Fake Grass
|
Fake grass is also known as: artificial grass, synthetic grass, and Astroturf; has become popular in sports, residential, and commercial applications. It has improved greatly over the last forty years. It looks better, feels better, and functions better than ever before. It continues to benefit from new developments and will be better in the future as well. Homeowners and businesses love it because it looks good with very little maintenance. Environment conscious people love it because it is the king of water conservation. Sports facilities love it because it is tough and stands up to whatever their athletes dish out.
Fake lawn can easily be compared to carpeting. The latest developments in fake turf include several layers. The base or is made of polypropylene which lends a giving nature to the overall product. On top of the polypropylene is a layer of rubber granules. The actual strands are either curly or straight. The fibres are coated with silicone. The curly fibres give depth to the fake grass and also help to hold up the straight ones. Altogether the construction is simple but has improved in look and texture.
Installation can be done in three ways. The pile, or backing to the fake turf, is filled with different materials. Wet based piles are unfilled but require wetting at frequent intervals when in use. Wet based piles have mostly sporting applications because the elimination of the sand pile reduces injuries. Filled piles use sand. There are two types of sand pile: dressed and filled. Dressed fake grass piles have sand up to about 5-8mm of the tips of the fibres. The sand is very fine and cannot be seen. Filled piles fill almost the entire pile. This type of pile make for a hard and abrasive surface and it decreases the speed of a rolling ball noticeably.
Fake lawns are finding applications in more and more areas. Cold weather sports like skiing and snowboarding use fake grass when there is no snow and get a similar feel to real snow. Skiers can train year round with the installation of fake turf. Homeowners are installing it in droves. Without the concerns of sports playing surfaces, landscaping with fake grass requires little thought. Most find it a good fit and simple decision to remove their time consuming natural grass and replace it with fake lawn.
